Mary Rountree Moore

Mary Rountree Moore’s work is strongly influenced by travels in the Caribbean, Europe, North and South Carolina coastlines and the US southwest. Mary Rountree Moore’s work includes expressions in acrylic, oil, concentrated watercolor and mixed media.

Mary Rountree Moore’s intense love of colors found in nature is a driving force that compels her to paint. She has a keen interest in the natural order found in the landscape, and is fascinated by the effect of the changing seasons. She likes to push the boundaries of realism into abstraction, as her compositions move from loose realism to abstraction. A confident painterly style, identifiable as my own, binds the body of work.

A strong creative spirit permeates all of her life; making art has interested Mary for as long as she remembers. She has found inspiration in studying the works of de Kooning, Diebenkorn, John Singer Sargent, and Joaquin Sorolla, to name just of few of the artists she enjoys. She loves to travel the U.S. and Europe to discover new inspiration, although she says she is always drawn back to the salt marshes of the southeast.

Mary is a native of Greensboro, NC. After graduating from Grimsley High School in 1964, Saint Mary’s College in 1966, and then UNC-CH in 1968, Mary began her career as a fashion designer in NYC where I lived for 5 years. She moved to my current home in Chapel Hill in 1973, continuing in sportswear design, and in 1990 became the Design Coordinator for Vietri, Inc. She returned to NYC in 1997 and attended the National Academy School of Fine Arts. She finally made painting my major creative focus full time in 1998.

Mary’s artist statement: “I strive to capture the feeling of those fleeting moments of the sublime - the vast beauty of nature which humbles us all. The images are derived from nature’s innate abstractions, allowing the mind’s eye to gather it’s own interpretations. It is the memory of those undeniable visual experiences that gives me inspiration.”
